Pulitzer Center Update July 22, 2025
Teacher Advisory Council Will Lead Lessons About AI Accountability in Their Communities
Country:

Last year, the Pulitzer Center introduced the Information and Artificial Intelligence Teacher Advisory Council, an education program established to extend the impact of the AI Accountability Network by developing resources that support classroom conversations about the use of predictive and surveillance technologies to guide decisions that impact a range of global communities.
By creating AI Accountability Classroom Toolkits the 14 educators in the inaugural Council responded to educator feedback and data about the challenges and opportunities that exist when trying to engage students in conversations about AI technologies. This summer, a new cohort of nine educators is building on that work by developing training materials to engage educators in their communities with AI accountability reporting and the AI Classroom Toolkits.
The 2025 AI Teacher Advisory Council represents eight school districts and one graduate education program across seven states. The Council includes classroom teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, and an educational researcher and professor. Over the course of six workshops from June to July 2025, Council members …
- Explored underreported news stories about information and artificial intelligence
- Leveraged Pulitzer Center education frameworks and data from audience research to drive discussions about opportunities and challenges for K-12 classrooms seeking to engage with questions about AI accountability
- Connected with Karol Ilagan, a journalist, educator, and the Pulitzer Center’s AI Spotlight Series coordinator; Francesca D’Annunzio, a 2024 Pulitzer Center AI Accountability Fellow and reporter at The Texas Observer; and science journalist Maddie Stone
- Collaboratively designed a professional learning workshop to engage educators in their communities with resources and reporting on AI accountability
In the months ahead, Council members will facilitate the AI Accountability Teacher Training they developed, which will collectively reach an estimated 400 educators in their respective communities. Council members will document learning and impact from the educators engaged in training, and ultimately present their learning in a public-facing showcase in fall 2025. Additionally, AI Accountability Teacher Training materials created through the program will be integrated into learning modules published on the Pulitzer Center website as a resource for other educators.
