Four months before the U.N. Climate Change Conference, a session at Festival 3i brings together 23 journalists to reflect on strategies for climate coverage and impact
During the 2025 Festival 3i, the Pulitzer Center hosted the workshop “Investigative Journalism in the Year of COP30,” bringing together 23 journalists from different regions in Brazil.
Festival 3i was held on June 7 at the institution Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM) in Rio de Janeiro.
The main goal of the session was to create a strategic space for dialogue on the role of journalism and communication in the public and negotiation agenda on climate change in the context of COP30, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will take place in Belém, Brazil, in November.
The workshop was organized into thematic blocks, with guiding questions and group discussions that allowed participants to share local and global experiences from their journalism and media experience. They explored how to strengthen climate coverage by expanding its reach and impact, and discussed the responsibilities of investigative journalism in the context of the climate crisis.
Participants emphasized that journalism must go beyond factual coverage and take on an active role: demanding transparency, holding governments and corporations accountable, and amplifying the voices of communities that keep the forest standing.
Using accessible language, creative formats, and connecting stories to people’s everyday lives were highlighted as key strategies to engage diverse audiences and break through information silos.

Collaboration, planning, and impact
The importance of early planning, cross-sector coordination, and the strategic circulation of content was also reinforced. Building networks—including journalists, researchers, grassroots communicators, and civil society organizations—was seen as essential to turning reporting into concrete action and influencing negotiations and public policy.
Participants pointed to the need to strengthen alliances, invest in early reporting, and continue this dialogue throughout 2025.
