Cafe Exit in Copenhagen serves as a coffee shop, but it is also a community meeting and event space for people formerly incarcerated. Image by Avery Sloan. Denmark, 2024.

People convicted of crimes in Denmark must repay their court and legal fees upon release. But with rising interest rates, the Danish National Debt Collection Agency says most of those people don't have the means to pay their debt.

In this project, Avery Sloan, a 2024 Reporting Fellow, reports on organizations working to help formerly incarcerated people repay their debts and re-enter society.
