Workshop on Cultural Management Research for Artists II

Julia Masvernat

Terraza, Buenos Aires

Definition of the type of management they are responsible for, its mission and objectives.
We could define Terraza like a place where work is done in a very cooperative way. We produce artworks, publications and events in some areas where there is a cross-roads with visual arts, audio visuals, electronic arts, music and literature. The main objective is to foster the circulation among the members through work. Terraza is a space of affinity. It has neither a specific shape nor a defined way of proceeding. It is constantly adjusting to time, contexts and ideas. Consequently, its sole mission is to remain as a space of ties and affinity to stimulate group and collaborative work. Besides encouraging the exhibition, circulation and dissemination of works in an independent way.

We set up the web site www.terrazared.com.ar as a space that is constantly running, and it is the most visible proof of Terraza’s existence. There, we show works specially made for internet and multimedia, and the magazine of out of the ordinary topics, “Pires de Metal”, this has a room full of artwork images by several visual artists and our own collection of music and books, which we have been editing with no hurry. At the web site, there is also a space for documentation and dissemination of similar projects, like the “la vaca multicolor” /multi-color cow/ or “furor” /hype/. Terraza is undoubtedly a self-managed project.

Description of the internal organization of its initiative, defining human resources they have and the job each of the members do in the management.
The members are not always the same. At the moment, there are four people that are the ones that make the general decisions. Other people join us to work at specific moments. All of us have access to working tools such as: digital design and publishing, as well as, experience in this area, these are very important resources to launch the web site, books and CDs. We also lend a hand to those artists who do not handle these technologies. Terraza never set up a regular schedule for its activities. There are more active moments than others.

Set a maximum and minimum objective projection and the expectations of the initiative, and assess the external view upon it.
A maximum projection would be to make the network grow bigger and welcome more people who agree on working in this way. The minimum projection would be to keep on generating activities to work at Terraza. There are different perspectives over Terraza, some people think we are only devoted to art-net, they think we are very much related with electronic art, it might be because we let us know through our web site. They also think that we are a group that makes group artwork although we feel that we are closer to a publishing house, a producing agency or a laboratory. We also receive some material from people to exhibit in the web site “terraza”. Few are the times when a meeting of this kind has been produced because we are not only interested in setting up an exhibition space on the web, we do believe there is a job to be done, an exchange of reflection and ideas to produce something together. Some other people came to us with integrating proposals and those are the ones we are more interested in.

Calendar and projects for 2003/2004
We want to work on some issues that are present in several of the works done in Terraza, such as maps, cartography, distances, crossroads, junctions, memories, souvenirs, narratives and temporalities. We would like to work with people who are physically far away and who, one way or the other, were part of Terraza. These topics would be like woolen threads to knit the network that has so far been made.

Nevertheless, without knowing where these ideas would possibly be developed or grown. We still do not know how this will be carried out. We simply want to throw this message in a bottle out to the sea and see what happens.

The idea is to draw up a game, propose the rules and make it circulate in different ways. Thus drawing a kind of blurred network. The final shape that this project can take is open. We have the possibility of publishing some already printed material, audiovisual, interactive or organize a library and use some internet space.
