Martín Torres
(visual arts student)
What is, in your
opinion, a professional artist?
I guess I get carried away
by what the second term transmits, I mean profession.
I think we can find art in all the people and in all the activities.
Also, it is a question of being tightly trapped by what makes
you be a professional artist as well as, accepting the territory
of the artistic diffusion as a part of your life, the pleasure
with you do it and the perseverance that your work may take. Honestly,
the best job you can do is the one that you can afford to do,
and the one you best know how to do.
What's the relation between art and money in your work?
Due to the fact that I am not
yet a renowned artist, I do not know how to combine pleasure and
money. I have thought, for a long time, that it would be good
to live without working, just painting or making sculptures because
I never got to the point of considering those activities as a
job. Working not only by the definition of getting
some payment, but also working because you need practice
and a great effort as a means to achieve your goals in life.
How do you resolve the conditions of visibility of your work in
the context you work in?
I cannot yet solve them, I guess it is a question of meditation
and practice.
How would you define cultural tourism?
It would be the way to define cultural diffusion, the fact
of exporting and importing works, their coming to our country
and our travelling away to know and learn more than we are taught
in our hometown.
How would you define culture shock?
I would define it as a fashion, I guess, many times in history
a cultural shock was reached in various fields. If I have to give
an opinion, I believe that it is the most contradictory stage.
On the one hand, it is easier to be recognised and there is a
greater diffusion of art and art is better valued but, on the
other hand, we can overdo it, we start with the cheap philosophy
of wondering: ... What is art? It is about denying the past unsuccessfully
so as to build up something different. And then comes twilight,
colours start to vanish and grey arises again in society.
What's the relationship between control and chance in your work?
I suppose what happens to me is that I try to control the
message that I want to get across, I look for the suitable way
to do so and I try to make my brushstrokes correctly. Once the
work is finished , I contemplate it and start to realise the I
have not controlled everything. That the outcome highly exceeds
what I had expected to say.
When I decide not to control anything and I experiment on the
piece then, I discover that the result is much more truthful and
expressive. Sometimes, I find answers or, else, I give them. And
some other times, I find just questions and that is amusing.
