"Hence our ruangrupa is formed to counter
the individual's inner struggling.
We are also certain that aside from the autho-rity, there always
has been another interfe-rence called the production orientation.
This kind of orientation intends to deal with art as an industrial
commodity only.
Art will only be able to get its dynamic and critical potentials,
if the artists deal with their works as an analyzed process instead
of a
producing one".
In this frame of ideas, Ade Darmawan and Hafiz started in 2000
an intiative of artists called ruangrupa. Its first activity was
to organize a research workshop by convoking 50 artists from Jakarta,
Bandung and Yogjakarta, inviting them to produce artwork for the
social context to which they belong. The working premises were:
exchange, intervention and negotiation or denying.
The project was called "Jakarta Habitus Publik". Issues
like censorship, self censorship and te-rritories were at the
forefront. The project took place during the Jakarta Art Festival,
these days through documentation.
ruangrupa. Is an artist initiative formed
by Jakarta based artists in January 2000. Ruangrupa provides and
arranges an autonomous art workspace for artists to live and work
intensively within a period of time. A place for dialogue for
interdisciplinary thoughts such as fine art, literature, sociology,
philosophy, and others. The program conceives : artist's residency,
art project, exhibitions, and ruangrupa quarterly journal called
karbon.

"Visual culture is infused with re-presentations
of life, mechanically, technologically and digitally produced images
of life. As consumers of this abundance of images, "we"
run the risk of finding ourselves gradually belonging to a globalized
scheme of construc-ted identities, leaving "us" with the
illusion of being together."
